Admissions at Heronfield Academy

Our admissions philosophy & process

The investment in these academic years sets the foundation for the future.

Our admissions process is thoughtfully designed to make a personal connection with your family. Whether applying to a private middle school has been part of your plan or are now just considering this option, we would like to speak to you. Our school’s founding and focus on the middle school years reflect our purpose and commitment to young people’s growth. We would like to share our story and hear yours.

Heronfield Academy attracts students who have a passion for learning, curiosity, and respect for others, students who seek a challenge, and those looking forward to working with teachers. We strive to enroll students who are adventurous learners and who exhibit kindness and compassion, matching our core values.

We encourage applicants to attend an open house or schedule a personal tour. After learning more about Heronfield, we encourage you to meet with the Admissions Director to discuss how Heronfield Academy matches your family’s education goals. The written portion of the application can be completed once you have opened an online portal. A completed admissions file includes a written section by both the applicant and family, current teacher recommendations in Math and English, school transcripts, interview, and an in-house assessment. The completed application is due by January 30, and Admissions Committee decisions will be shared in late February.

We intend to make the process of applying fair and equitable to all applicants and their families. We welcome students of diverse backgrounds and experiences, and we provide financial aid each year to make the Heronfield experience available to as many students as we can.

Admissions Q&A

Are interviews required for prospective students?

Yes, all students are required to schedule an interview during the application process.  It is an opportunity for us to get to know you and your child, and we will be glad to answer any questions that you may have.

What financial aid does Heronfield Academy offer?

We are fortunate to have a generous need-based scholarship program. Heronfield Academy seeks to understand each family’s unique circumstances and encourages applicants to apply for financial aid.

Families exploring the possibility of aid should visit the School and Student Services (SSS) website to learn more about the process and to complete the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) online.  SSS will evaluate the estimated family contribution, which will help the Financial Aid Committee to determine financial aid grants in accordance with enrollment goals, the annual financial aid budget, and school policy.

Do you require the SSAT?

We do not require the middle school SSAT scores. We conduct an in-house assessment for the admissions process.

When does Heronfield Academy send acceptance letters?

Heronfield Academy will notify applicants of its admissions decisions in late February.

Are late applications accepted?

Heronfield Academy’s application deadline is January 30.  If a candidate applies after this date, the Admissions Committee will evaluate the application on a rolling basis, taking into consideration the availability of openings in each grade. A candidate could also be placed on a waitlist for a possible future acceptance.

Where do students attend high school after graduating from Heronfield Academy?

Heronfield’s students most often step onto their next campuses as confident students who are ready to contribute to their school community.   Approximately half of our students attend their public high school in their district while half choose to attend a private high school.  Heronfield Academy offers a secondary school advising program (HASSA) to ensure a consideration of schools that are best suited to each child and each family. The HASSA team supports and advocates on behalf of each student to assist with each step of the application and the placement process.

How is financial aid determined?

All financial aid applications are processed through the School and Student Service for financial aid (SSS). Award sizes are determined by the Financial Aid Committee using a standardized calculation derived by SSS. This calculation considers income, assets, liabilities, family size, and the number of children attending tuition-charging institutions. After allowances for living necessities and taxes, discretionary income is considered available for education on a sliding scale. Families with larger earnings and assets are expected to make greater contributions.

How is financial aid determined in the case of divorce or legal separation?

In cases of divorce or legal separation, Heronfield Academy requires both custodial and non-custodial parents to complete the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) and provide copies of all tax schedules directly to School and Student Service (SSS link). Stepparents’ ability to contribute to a student’s education is also considered.

Do you need to apply for financial aid each year?

Yes, each year a family will need to apply for financial aid by January 30 for the following academic year.

Does applying for financial aid impact admissions decisions?

Admission decisions and financial aid assessments are made independently. All families who are interested in financial aid are encouraged to apply.
