Heronfield Spanish teacher Cate Murphy spent a week this past summer in Parramos, Guatemala visiting and volunteering in a home for abandoned and neglected children, Nuestros pequeños hermanos (NPH) — Our Little Brothers and Sisters. She spent time with the children, volunteered in the kitchen and in the clinic, and, most importantly, got to know Valentin and his siblings. Valentin is a 14-year-old boy sponsored by Heronfield Academy. As his sponsor, the school provides financial support for Valentin. More importantly, however, are the letters the Heronfield students write to him. In turn, Valentin writes back to the students in Spanish. In this way, Heronfield students get to know Valentin and learn about his life in Guatemala. Sponsors are called padrinos, or godparents, and the children who are sponsored are referred to as ahijados — godchildren. Cate also makes an annual trip to see her godchildren in the NPH home of the Dominican Republic.
