Our annual beach clean-up is a manifestation of one of Heronfield’s most important values, Caring.  Hannah Clark, science teacher and Coordinator of Student Life, partnered with the Blue Ocean Society to arrange a day of citizen science and community service. A representative from Blue Ocean reviewed the dangers of plastics to marine life and gave students special instructions on the types of trash to collect, the types that should stay on the beach to biodegrade, and the types of debris that should be collected by adult supervisors. Students and teachers cleaned a section of Hampton Beach and collected data on the “type, frequency, and amount” of everything they collected. In less than two hours, students collected 29 pounds of trash!
