One of Heronfield’s core values is CELEBRATION, and one of our favorite ways to celebrate is with an all-school dance. This January students gathered on a wintry Friday night dressed to the nines for a semi-formal dance.
With a spinning, sparkling disco ball lighting up the dance floor, students kicked off their shoes and danced the night away. Our faculty member in charge of dances, Mr. King, spends the week prior reminding students that if “you want to have a party, you’ve got to BRING the party!” or “the party isn’t ABOUT you, it’s FOR you!”. This inclusive, community-oriented spirit makes Heronfield dances so different from other schools. The kids feel safe and unselfconscious in their participation. Students are taught how to graciously invite and accept another student to dance. Students that choose to dance for the night dance with anyone who asks. This takes a great deal of the nervousness and worry out the evening for the kids and allows them to enjoy time with their classmates.
Chaperoned by 5 faculty members, the school dances are a wonderful way for the students to socialize outside of the school day. The fall dance has a Halloween or costume theme, and the spring dance is often a celebration of the return of warm weather. Students help plan the decorations, food, music and help to both setup and clean up at the end of the evening.
These dances are a true highlight of student life at Heronfield!
